I can not find an organization that will take donations of used pet products, like litter boxes. Any ideas?

I’ve tried shelters, Good Will, etc and can not find a place to take a used, but cleaned, litter box, carrier, and feeding bowl.

I would suggest joining a site called FreeCycle.

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,537 groups with 5,414,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer. Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering your city & state into the search box on the home page or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box.

Here you can post all types of items, from pet supplies, right down to pets that need a new home. Just remember this is FREEcycle, so everything is offered free of charge, no strings attached. You can also browse the listings, as you may find your own treasures you would like to have & email that person a request to be considered for that product.

When you post something to “Offer” it is totally up to you who you decide to give it to, you can give it to the first person who replies to your posting, or you can give it to the person who sounds like they need it the most, it is totally up to you.

Good luck, I am sure you can find a new home for your pet supplies, or anything else, you no longer need.

i find it very hard to believe that your animal shelter (animal control) is not willing to take that stuff off your hands… they need anything they can get (cat/dog wise)

I can certainly understand why they wouldn’t want to take a used litterbox, even if it has been cleaned. A used litterbox could still have your cat’s pheromones on it, which could cause behavior problems. And some parasites will linger even in cleaned litterboxes. If the carrier and food dishes are plastic, the shelters may be concerned about the possibility of transmitting disease there, too.

If the food dishes are metal or ceramic and the cat carrier is in good condition, I’d suggest Freecycle. The litterbox, frankly, I wouldn’t try to give away.

Freecycle, they’ll get snapped up ultra fast. You can also contact cat rescue groups that are listed online for your state.

Check out the freecycle though, we’ve unloaded so much junk on that it’s not funny! Extra aluminum siding, plants, used appliances, old computers, office supplies, fabric, salt/pepper shakers, you name it, people want it and they come over and take it away for you. You put it in a bag on the porch with the person’s name on and you don’t even have to see or talk to them.
