why are there so many fans of Science Diet pet food, when its such poor quality?

by admin on January 15, 2010

YIKES!!! I saw a question here asking what was the best food for a cat, and many readers said Science Diet! I WAS HORRIFIED!!! Science Diet (many formulas) contain BY-Products (beaks feet feathers – preserved with chemical pesticide Ethoxyquin -linked to numerous health problems) PLUS the food PAID for vet endorsement (not justified and inflates the price of a terrible product) (also keep in mind if a vet reccomended it – vets receive VERY LITTLE education about foods but will often reccomend a food they sell)
why are there so few people educated about pet nutrition?

Marketing sells product. Also they were one of the earliest premium foods to the market. The premium pet food market has improved vastly since Science diet first came out.

Marketing.

Budweiser is the #1 selling brand of beer in the States. Is it becuase it is really the best? Hahahahahaha! Anyone who thinks “yes” is a corporate shill and would make their marketing department pleased.

i like science diet cause its what my vet prescribed for my dog and she hasn’t had any bladder stones since she’s been on it.

I think some people mistakenly assume vets are experts on every aspect of the animals they treat, hence why you see some very bad behavioral and nutritional advice being given at times. Afterall, if they didn’t hear it from the vet then who would they trust to tell them if they weren’t involved in other animal related groups? Just like everything from declawing to backyard breeder, the average person doesn’t know there is a problem until someone brings it to their attention.

My daughter raised Persains for years. When she switched FROM Science diet, her cats’ overall health much improved.

Marketing….TO VETS. Sponsoring. Vets get free trips to Vegas, London, Botswana, wherever. They also get free pens, paper, frisbees, weird LED emitting baubles, candy, poop bags, doggie bandanas, coffee mugs, and silly putty, etc., etc., etc.
