Can I feed my dogs mice from the pet shop?

by admin on January 23, 2010

I feed my dogs home made meals: I give them protein, veggies, oils, ect ect but I was just thinking, could I give them mice for protein? At the pet shop they sell mice for about $2 for your pet snake. And a live animals will have all the nutrition that a dog needs.

If I can, what is the most humane way to kill the mouse? And how can I teach my dogs to eat it?

I agree, this is a gross idea but I want the best for my dogs.

You’re a sadistic cruel jerk.
If its full of protein than why don’t you eat it as well.

I think this is too gross and I’m not at all sure it’s healthy. Mice are generally disease ridden and I don’t think you should risk it. It’s not like pet shops are the healthiest place to buy live animals. Do a lot more research than just asking on here before you risk your dog’s health and possibly their lives.

This is going too far. Your dogs are already getting better nutrition than they ever would in the wild.

Buying and killing mice for them makes you sound like a psychopath!

I suggest that you ask your vet, but I don’tt think you should. Mice would make your dogs breath smell bad, and that could get expensive if you have a biger dog. Plus, that is realy gross and it might make your dogs sick.

Surely there is no need to go so far. I understand that you want the best for your dogs but a healthy balanced diet (you will find that many home cookers for dogs provide their favorite recipes on the internet mouse free) should be plenty. I don’t believe mice were ever part of the natural food group for dogs in the first place.

Also please keep in mind that although dogs may have originated from domesticated wild animals there has since been a long history of domestic life which means that their dietary habits have changed over generations. I don’t believe that any qualified vet would ever endorse such a method

Mice are good to feed. Some raw feeders feed Mice. But I would buy it from a distributor. You won’t be able to humanly kill them. It is also recommend that you freeze them for at least on month before feeding to a dog.

I guess anything short of being eatin alive by a snake could be deemed humane. Poor mice……could you imagine being dropped in a 3 foot cage with a beast 30 times your size that is going to eat you soon?

That’s a provocative question which exposes an hypocrisy in the pet world, so I’d call it ‘Philosophical Trolling.’
Your dog might more naturally eat roadkill or other carrion; but they do enjoy pouncing to try to catch a mouse or vole.
What’s best for your dog, which is an artificially bred creature, is however regular dog food.

Actually, there was a study that showed that Canadian wolves survive largely by eating mice.

So…you probably could, but at $2 a mouse, I would think it would be very expensive.

And, really…..do you want to be butchering mice every day?

Whats wrong with regular raw feeding?

I’ve never even thought of this because we think of mice as “dirty” animals. But yes, a mouse would be fine to feed raw technically. In fact all the meat you feed should be raw, and you can stop feeding veggies they’re useless. Just add salmon oil or salmon itself and a little raw liver to the dog’s meals twice a week and you’ll be fine. Instead of 2 dollar mice though, it’s much more simple to buy whole chickens that way they can get the benefit of the organs. Also whole rabbit are pretty easy to find on the internet, they’ll be a LOT cheaper per pound than MICE as well! Lol!
