I mean there are so many pet foods brands out there now its all so confusing. And the kinds that are breed specific are even more confusing whats different in pug food than boxer food? I remember when I was a kid or a teen ager it seemed that my mom went to the grocery store and bought purina puppy chow, in the little box that was shaped like squares with o’s and it was milk coated and all our dogs with good ole healthy mutts. I am not against healthy pet food, I just want to know when it all began and if any one else remembers when you were a kid and all dogs ate purina puppy chow, I am 40 so 30 years ago or so.
Well I looked it up an purina puppy chow started in 1894.Thats a freaking long time to make food. And what exactly was put in it in 1894 and how are dogs still alive today if they ate crap. And what was fed to dogs before dog food, like in Egypt. Thoughts to ponder, I know.

back then that’s the best there was. now its like you’re a terrible owner if you feed that. I think it started about 15-20 yeasr ago but in the past few years has become much more popular. The breed specific foods tartget specific health concerns of that breed (ex. extra glucosamine in Rott food to prevent hip Displaysia) Also, Royal Caanin has kibble shaped to the mouth of each breed so it is easier to chew or pick up. It is because the role of dog has changed from back yard pet for the kids to small furry human companion.
well times have changed. those brands were considered the “best” because there was simply no other options. Holistic dog foods have higher meat contents, and better quality often human grade ingredients. Many people argue their dogs are doing “fine” on common brands. You could easily say my dog was doing “fine” on grocery store brands from looking at this picture from 2005. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jordanspivaphotos/4430716982/
But it’s obvious that wasn’t as healthy as he could be when looking at a currently taken pic of him. He is currently on Wellness.

True. But once again your missing the point. Theres a different between a dog doing fine on a food and thriving on a food. A cruddy diet based on corn with very little meat is enough to sustain a dog if heavily supplemented, once again, this is not thriving.
and Before dog food dogs were eating meat scraps.
FROMM was the first:
Since 1904, The Fromm Family has maintained a tradition of quiet innovation dedicated to the health and nutrition of animals. In the 1930′s, The Fromm Family introduced the first canine distemper vaccine. In 1949, we introduced the concept of premium pet food to the public. As the country’s first and oldest premium pet food company, we have earned the reputation as an industry leader, producing only the highest grade pet foods with the finest natural ingredients.
Based in Wisconsin, Fromm Family Foods is now in its fourth generation of being family owned and operated. We take great pride in this family commitment, as it ensures that our customers will continue to receive superior pet food products now and for years to come.
For more than four generations, the Fromm family has brought together veterinarians, biochemists, research specialists and food production engineers to formulate our pet foods.
In 1948, the late Dr. Willard Roberts, Ph.D. and chief nutritionist created the first generation of Fromm Family Nutritionals pet foods. Dr. Roberts is recognized as the father of modern pet foods, having pioneered the process of producing the dry, granular food that’s so popular today.
Since then, we’ve continued to improve upon each Fromm Nutritionals recipe, while maintaining certain traditions. For example, our Classic Nutritionals line is still based on the “four-grain principle”, and uses 17 different ingredients.
This concentrated, balanced blend of foods results in easier digestion, fewer allergic reactions, and increased energy for your dog or cat.
