How does one become a pet nutritionist?

I’m very interested in pet nutrition. At this point in my life, I’m seriously considering going to veterinary school (though I actually would like to become a small animal/exotics specialist). However, I’m also very passionate about pet nutrition (including that of dogs and cats).

I know that in veterinary school I will be ‘taught’ during a short nutritional course about ‘pet nutrition’ and that foods like Science Diet are good foods and so on and so forth. However, I want to educate myself past that when I’m finished with schooling.

The thing that bothers me is that I see some pet nutritionists (people who have done further studying) who praise Innova and and the other high quality foods… and then I see some who are still insisting that Science Diet and Purina are great foods.

I want to do my own research someday, with unbiased, actual scientific studies (studies that weren’t done by the actual pet food companies).

I don’t know the first thing about this. How do people educate themselves further?
Oz, I realize that. That was my point actually.

I’m concerned that any schools that might offer additional nutrition courses will be just as bad as that little course you get during regular veterinary training, really.

Your idea on contacting already established nutritionists is a good one, though. That’s certainly something to look into.

I think I’d also ask what additional research they’ve done on their own… maybe I can figure out why some of them claim foods like Innova as the best while others are still claiming Science Diet and the likes are best.
That’s a good idea too, Runeamok. I did know that holistic vets are usually more educated in that aspect

Please add your comments to help spread the word about the cruel way in which their poisonous pet good was developed, I was sick when I found out this had been done to dogs by Iam in order that I can feed mine! I now buy a cruelty-free brand, make sure you do!

Pet Food ALERT: Natural Balance is withdrawing DRY “Venison and Brown Rice” for DOGS?

Itchmo has confirmed an email from Natural Balance that they are removing two products from sale:

Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Formula
Venison and Green Pea Dry Dog Cat Formula
These products do not contain wheat gluten. No deaths or serious illnesses have been reported and no recall warning has been issued. The warning applies only to products sold in the last week, according to Natural Balance.

“Please know that at this time we are removing this product from the shelves, as we have had some phone calls indicating gastric upset after eating this formula. At this time, we are unsure if this could just be a particular batch problem, or simply customers switching diets too fast. However, in the meantime while we are looking further into this matter, we are not recommending to feed this formula, and are suggesting to feed our Potato and Duck or Sweet Potato and Fish Dry Dog Formula.”

I can not find an organization that will take donations of used pet products, like litter boxes. Any ideas?

I’ve tried shelters, Good Will, etc and can not find a place to take a used, but cleaned, litter box, carrier, and feeding bowl.

Nutrition education?

I see a lot of questions and ranting and preaching and so on about pet nutrition on this site. A lot of people say “vets (and their technicians) don’t get any nutrition education, and are only reccommending certain foods because [insert reason]“. While the preaching and ranting are HUGE pet peeves of mine, I do agree that as a vet tech I feel like I haven’t had very good education on pet nutrition. My question is: How do I go about educating myself in an objective, factual manner about pet nutrition, so that I may answer others’ questions AND make sure my own pets are getting the nutrition they need?
