Is a “premium” quality cat/pet food essential to a healthy pet?
For 20 years we’ve fed our cats Purina Friskies and Fancy Feast, Pedigree wet for the dog. Usually some form of P urina dry as well. Purina Brand primarily for cost, brand recognition, availability, and perceived quality for the money.
More to the point, we’ve recently lost 2 cats; one older one to renal failure and one a few years younger to a completely unexpected thrombosis/embolism. I guess the root of the question is would a higher quality food likely prevent some illnesses OR are Friskies, Fancy Feast, Pedigree and the like just fine. Maybe most illnesses are more genetics and simple fate rather than diet.
For the record, our pets are not visibly unhealthy and don’t visit the vet abnormally often. This question is not to tarnish any one brand of food or company as I’m certain these companies are responsible, produce quality food, and take their roles quite seriously. I’ve just been considering the real benefits if any to better quality food.

How to cook healthy for your pet?
I’ve decided I want to start cooking meals for my dogs and cats. I’m not sure how to go about doing this. I feel it would be healthier than pet food though. I want to give them the best of everything, including diet. I really could use some advice. What should I cook for dogs? Cats? I’m sure I will have to cook something different for each. I’d appreciate any tips and suggestions.
Feb 13, 2010 | 4 | healthy pet foodIf you feed your pet a healthy food….?
Is it true they will have a softer coat and live longer than if you fed them something with ‘by products’ and all that bad stuff in the ‘cheap’ foods (ie:iams, science diet, friskies, etc)???

If you love your dog or cat enough to consider-for-a-moment there is a better way to feed it, which billion-dollar dog food companies spend millions to make-sure you never find out about, then watch this. thedogfoodconspiracy.com The widespread disease and death of dogs and cats from nutritionally inadequate and poison-laden commercial pet food is no secret in the world of vets and dog and cats experts. Educate yourself and don´t believe in the usual commercials claiming the superior quality of pet food. This is a multi billion business including vets as well and they are frequently not even aware of the truth because they are not supposed to get educated in real healthy pet food and what it is really about with the big companys providing all the products around the world. The truth is a lot more nasty as you ever might have thought. There is a lot more to that, you can chose to make your own pet food, using the advice and recipes or there are a few companys producing a real healthy pet food, which is not and never can be a dried substance, which contains the most poisionous stuff and leads within 4 to 6 years to serious disease or death. Please contemplate this and save your beloved pet in making a change.
Why do some “healthy” pet food brands put VEGETABLES in cat food?
When cats cannot digest or assimilate nutrients from vegetables? Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning that they only eat MEAT, and nothing else. They might chew on grass occasionally but eating vegetables everyday is not normal or safe for cats in my opinion (especially vegetables that cats would never eat in their natural setting, such as peas). Plus, I read online that tomatoes can be toxic to cats, yet some cat foods actually list tomatoes as one of their ingredients! Can anyone explain this all? Thanks.
CF: I am aware of those ingredients, and that’s why I only choose healthy cat food brands such as Weruva and Wellness. But it puzzled me that the healthy ones have vegetables in them.
I remember hearing that tuna is bad for cats, but most seafood-flavored cat foods are mostly composed of tuna. It’s crazy.
Raw Pet Food for Cats, Healthy Diet?
I do not own a dog so I am more interested in learning about it for cats. I recently ordered Wild Kitty raw cat food and one of my cats just loves it. However, it is not sold in my area and costs a lot – up to almost $50 just to ship for the raw frozen though it is free shipping for the freeze dried.
Also – I read that the chicken kind of Wild Kitty came up positive for salmonella during a random federal inspection in February 2007 and that salmonella can have wicked effects not just on the animal(s) but on the human handling them.
So – what are the options for GOOD nutritious food, meaning healthier than store bought junk. I have read up on this and have read that pets now have more health problems due to all these carbs and all this junk in the basic pet food, that there is a ton of byproducts, like the parts of other deceased animals, including ones who died from various diseases. Any idea on healthy diets for cats that is also cost effective? Raw? Organic? Best Kind?
